Pros: The illustrations are vibrant and communicate the emotions of the sheep well, especially the "dark valley" page. My four-year old seemed to understand the metaphor of the shepherd and the sheep. He enjoyed the drama of the sad/lost sheep being swept into the loving arms of the shepherd. I'm glad to find a book that communicates the nearness and protectiveness of God. The book is very sturdy and high quality.Cons: The words are so over-parphrased that my son could memorize the book and still not recognize another version of the 23rd Psalm. I think that's a pity since the familiar Psalm has so much descriptive language; I miss "He prepares a table for me in the presence of my enemies" or "my cup runs over" or "I shall dwell in the house of the lord forever." I guess I will have to teach him another version of the Psalm. This book is the definition of quality. Well worth the money. I rarely buy books new. I typically buy them in bulk used but this is just stunning. I don't like changing the words of the bible. I think it's very important to be biblically sound and keeping the language the same is a big part of that but others may not agree. So even though I'm not a fan of the language being changed it's a personal hang up for me and don't think they deserve any less stars because this book is captivating. Sorry if i sound cheesy it's just really hard to find quality religious children's books. I'm a very happy customer. I just wish it was word for word. I would buy a library of these if it were word for word.
